REPAIR AND CARE

Pool and hot tub repair, from the shop on 12th Ave South

Liners, covers, skimmers, plumbing, drains and equipment on pools. Heaters, leaks and plumbing on hot tubs. Joe oversees most of the service work.

How a failing pool or tub tells you

Pool trouble starts as something small and wrong. The water line sits an inch lower each week with no dry spell to blame. A liner shows a wrinkle at the wall, or lifts off the floor near the skimmer. A faceplate cracks after one hard Wisconsin winter. A drain cover rocks when it should be seated. None of it feels urgent on a Saturday, and all of it gets more expensive to ignore through the summer.

A hot tub is quieter about it. The water will not climb to the set temperature, a pump hums but moves nothing, the topside throws an error, or there is a damp patch in the cabinet that was not there last month. Freeze damage is its own category around Onalaska and out toward Sparta and Tomah: a storm drops the power, the tub sits cold, and by morning a fitting has split.

If you cannot tell which of those you have, that is fine. Call the store at (608) 783-4477, say what you see and what the pool or tub is, and Joe, who oversees most of our service and installations, will tell you what it sounds like before anyone drives out.

On the pool wall and under the cabinet

A liner change is slow, careful work. The water comes down, the old liner comes out of the track, and the wall and floor get checked and smoothed before anything new goes in. The new liner is seated into the track, then pulled tight to the floor as the pool starts to fill, so the wrinkles are worked out while the water is still shallow. Skimmers get new faceplates and gaskets, and a failed throat gets replaced rather than patched. Plumbing lines are cut back to sound pipe and rebuilt with new fittings. Pumps, filters and heaters are repaired where that is sensible and replaced with a properly sized unit where it is not.

Drains are the one place we are strict. Replacement anti-entrapment covers are chosen with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act and the ANSI/APSP-16 2011 standard in mind, because a drain is a safety part before it is a plumbing part. Safety covers go on with anchors set into the deck and straps tensioned to the pool. One plain limit: we do not offer resurfacing for gunite and concrete pools.

On a hot tub the order is different. Leak detection comes first, because a wet cabinet can be a jet fitting, a pump union or a split line, and guessing costs more than looking. Then the repair itself, whether that is a heater, a pump, the controls or the plumbing run behind the panel.

After the repair, before the next freeze

A new liner or a rebuilt line is only as good as the water it holds. Once it is filled, bring a sample to the counter at 1001 12th Ave South in Onalaska and we will read it with you, so the first weeks of the new liner are not spent fighting a chemistry problem. Hours are Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 4.

Before the cold comes, a safety cover on the pool and a good fit on the hot tub cover do more for next spring than any repair will. We keep covers in stock for Sundance Spas hot tubs, ready to pick up. If something does freeze, call early. Waiting a week usually turns one split fitting into three.
